The Nonprofit FAQ

Local Organizations State-by-State: A through M
In many states, an association of nonprofits provides management assistance, group buying, insurance, advocacy on behalf of the sector and other services of value to member organizations. Many of these associations are members of the http://www.councilofnonprofits.org">National Council of Nonprofits; members of the National Council can be found at http://www.councilofnonprofits.org/salocator.

To find information for a specific state, scroll down in this file. If the state is not listed, that means we have not heard of any general-purpose nonprofit support organization there. Any information that can add to or correct this list will be very welcome; please click on the Feedback button at the bottom of this page to send us any suggestions or corrections.

Action without Borders offers listings of organizations searchable by country (and state) with links to their websites and other information. See http://www.idealist.org/. Idealist also maintains a list of "support organizations" for nonprofits in the US and around the world, see http://www.nonprofits.org/tools/support-orgs.html.

The addresses of state charities registration offices are available from the National Association of State Charities Officials at http://www.nasconet.org/agencies.

Dennis McMillian, President

The Foraker Group is a unique Alaska organization with three major goals to help enhance Alaska's nonprofit sector. Our first goal is to build our state’s philanthropic infrastructure by helping nonprofit organizations function at capacity. We offer state-of-the-art education, training and support to strengthen the management and leadership skills of nonprofit professionals. And, we work with organizations around the state to develop more ways for Alaskans to give back to their communities through programs like workplace giving and lifetime or planned giving.

There's helpful advice about starting a nonprofit in Alaska, and valuable suggestions about risk management and other appropriate worries for nonprofit leaders in any state, in James D. DeWitt's A LEGAL HANDBOOK FOR NONPROFIT
