The Nonprofit FAQ

How do I find a volunteer accountant?
There does not seem to be any broad listing of volunteer or pro bono accounts available. One strategy might be to call the Society of CPAs in your state and inquire about pro bono referral services.

There is a directory of these organizations at http://www.accountingmajors.com/accountingmajors/articles/statecpas.html

From the BOARD CAFE for 11/10/98:

networks and rolodexes of your fellow board members to find a willing volunteer.

The Clearinghouse for Volunteer Accounting Services provides
accounting services to nonprofit organizations by matching accountants with organizations in need of accounting services. All accountants work on a volunteer basis, and offer their services free of charge to eligible nonprofits. This enables nonprofit organizations to obtain professional accounting services at no cost. [Note: When I tried this service while editing this page in August 2010 I did not find any live listings after several searches. —Ed.]
