The Nonprofit FAQ

Where are general lists of nonprofit jobs?
On June 18, 2003, Donald A. Griesmann, Esq., Ventnor, NJ, updated this list of nonprofit employment sites; it is no longer being updated.

A general introduction to all the career-related information at Idealist is found at http://www.idealist.org/if/i/en/faq/928-310/295-201.

General Nonprofit Career Sites

Nonprofit Tech Jobs offers an e-mail nonprofit technology job posting. The post must be an announcement of a career opportunity in nonprofit technology or it will not be approved. It is not a forum for make-money-fast schemes, for circulating a person’s resume, or for advertising jobs that do not have a clear benefit to the nonprofit sector.

The following information has to be provided: in the subject field of the post: the job title, the organization that is hiring, and the location of the job. Here's an example: "Network Engineer, TechFoundation (Cambridge, MA). Note that the city and state are parenthesized. Be very specific about the skills, qualifications, credentials, and experience sought and about which of these are non-negotiable. Stipulate whether the job is on a full-time, part-time, or consulting basis. If the job is tied to a time-limited project, be specific about that. If hiring is contingent on a pending grant or contract, say so. If the salary, benefits, perks, and reporting structure are already determined, consider including them in the post. Include information about your organization. Relevant information might be some or all of the following: your mission, annual budget, size of staff, organizational culture, and IT infrastructure.

Finally, include very specific instructions about next steps for individuals who would like more information or who are ready to apply for the position. Ideally, the post should give the name of the contact person, and his or her title, email address, street address, phone number, and fax number.

To post a job description to this list, prepare it as a regular email and send it to [email protected]. See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Nonprofit_Tech_Jobs/ for subscribing.

diversity channels for a variety of minority groups from African-Americans to
Women. If you are looking for a job, there are two options: in the middle of
the Home Page near the top is a yellow button Advanced Job Search that will
take you to a page that will lead you through questions to help narrow your
choices. The other alternative is to click the button "Job Seekers" at the
top of the left-hand banner. That will begin your journey through some
15,000 jobs. Employers can scroll to the bottom of the page to a yellow box,
click on "Employers" which will take you to another page, click on "Not
member" and follow the directions. There is a fee but someone will get back
to you about that.

Posting a job on HandsNet, http://www.handsnet.org/ will reach a variety of
people in the nonprofit world including people in community development.
There is a 30-day free posting available as well as simply a trial membership
for 30 days. There is a membership fee that is worth the price for many
nonprofits and jobseekers use during the year on a variety of subjects.
HandsNet is a product of "Hands across America" conducted about 3-4 decades
ago.

TechSoup has a Career Corner list of web sites that will post job openings.
Most of the jobs listed are technical offerings. You can access the Career
Center through
http://www.techsoup.org/careercorner.cfm. As of this date there is no posted
fee for posting a job, but there may be a fee in the future. There is a
listing of articles that may be useful for the job seeker. TechSoup has
articles and discussion groups about technology that should be a clue about
the jobs available generally.

with public policy and advocacy on such topics as economic policy,
healthcare, foreign policy and Social Security, http://www.epn.org/. EPN members may post job openings free of charge. To become a member, there is a
sliding fee scale based on the annual budget of the organization. For an
organization with a budget under $500,000 the membership fee is $100 and the

three months. Groups are asked to send the job title, brief description, and
link. The posting fee for nonmembers is $150.00 per job position. At the
time of this writing, August 1, 2001, there were 35 jobs on line. There is
no posting area for job seekers.

Charity Channel will post listings for nonprofit and certain for-profit corporations. Visit http://charitychannel.com/ and choose CareerSearch from the menu across the top of the screen. The fee for
posting a job announcement is $155 for 120 days. Persons seeking employment

job classification and organization.

The job bank is at http://www.imakenews.com/ephilanthropy/index000033520.cfm. Job seekers can subscribe to the ezine at that page. There were only three jobs posted, each 30 days before my latest review in June 2004. Part of the problem may be that it is not easy to navigate from their home page to the employment sections.

The ePhilanthropy Foundation is one of several nonprofit organizations that seek to foster the ethical use of the Internet for philanthropic purposes. Persons interested in what ethical issues are impacting nonprofit groups should review those pieces from the homer page - http://www.ephilanthropy.org/site/PageServer

number of employees ranging from $1,000 for up to 35 employees to $4,000 for
126+ employees. Job seekers can post a resume and search for available
employment opportunities in the database without a fee. Those seeking jobs

activate or deactivate the profile, and are able to hide personal
information. HSCareers.com also offers a training and conference calendar,
interview "hints", links to educational and professional resources, human

LatPro.com's site, http://www.latpro.com/, is a large job location for "the
best jobs for Spanish and Portuguese speakers." The site is in English,
Spanish and Portuguese. In addition to the large for-profit companies, IBM,
Coca-Cola and government agencies, there are not-for-profit jobs available as
well. The NPOs featured at the site include Habitat for Humanity, American
Red Cross, Save the Children, United Way and Urban Justice Center. I did a
job search over a 2-week period under "nonprofits," placing a minimum salary
level at $20,000 for employment in the US and Canada and with language
ability in Spanish and Portuguese. The list that came up had NPO jobs
available for community outreach, health care, clinic manager,
communications, and grants acquisition coordinator and more, a total of 14
openings. Employers seeking diverse, bilingual, bicultural employees may
find listing here helpful. The first posting is free. Subsequent postings
cost $125 for 45 days, although there is a package rate for 5 or more
postings and there are other options available. There is a Resource section
covering legal requirements to work "abroad," resume assistance, a salary
wizard that looks at international salaries and more.

location. This site is aimed at the nonprofit world. Employers can post a
"Regular Employment" for 3 weeks at a cost of $95. The notice of employment

A Jobs for People Who Care,http://jobsforpeoplewhocare.com/ states that
its service is aimed at people who care, "Whether you are a nurse, a teacher,
a firefighter or even an environmental activist" Job seekers can create a
Search Agent Profile under a number of job titles, overseas, social services,
charities, advocacy and nonprofit and more. It is not clear what the
difference is between charity and nonprofit, so a job seeker may want to post
under several Agents. Employers can post job announcements under the same
criteria as the Agents, overseas, social services and so on. The site is
offering all postings free until January 1, 2002, and is trying to build a
client base. The day I looked at the site, June 22, 2001, there were three
job openings under "nonprofit" and some Agents had none. There is a log-on
process by user name and password. There is an e-mail service to keep
applicants aware of new jobs. The links have a significant number of
connections to Canada.

Jobs are advertised on the web site of the Chronicle of Philanthropy and
their Career Network, http://www.philanthropy.com/jobs.dir/jobsmain.htm. The

Times
at the site also. There are certain criteria that have to be met to be
eligible.

The site http://www.charitycareers.com offers job listings, volunteer
opportunities, career tips and news stories of interest to those who work
for, or wish to work for, charities and other nonprofit organizations in
Canada. http://www.charityvillage.com/charityvillage/career.html also has

There were over a hundred nonprofit opportunities listed at HotJobs.com on

paste one. Employers should read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) first

available.

If your current work, or at least the majority of it, for the past 5 years
has been to build democratic structures and leadership to empower people to
gain social, economic and environmental justice and to sustain the human
spirit, look to the Job Board for National Organizers Alliance. Membership
dues are equal to one day's wages. Employers can post openings but the fees
are not listed at the site, http://www.noacentral.org. The theme here is
community organizers from diverse backgrounds fighting against all "isms",
racism, sexism and more.

Feminist and progressive organizations can take advantage of the job bank at
the Feminist Career Center, http://www.feminist.org/911/jobs/911jobs.asp.
Jobseekers may post a resume to the "position wanted" section of the site.
Jobs are listed regionally, mostly NPOs and universities.

The Senior Job Bank site at http://www.seniorjobbank.org/ has government and
NPO jobs listed but the application form at the site mentions nothing about
NPOs. Applicants will have to be creative to find a nonprofit job. The
manager of the site admits that there are many areas that are blank and is
trying to reach employers to post opportunities for persons 50 years of age
and older. Jobs in the U.S., Canada and Australia are listed. Postings are
free.

The National Association of Child Advocates, http://www.childadvocacy.org,
was organized in 1984 to support the work of member child advocacy groups.
There are 63 member organizations. The web site is accepting jobs posted by
member agencies only at this time, August 15, 2001. If you are interested in
trying to find a job in this field, you may be best served by finding the
address of your local member agency and contacting that group about job
openings.

The Land Trust Alliance is a membership organization. Members can post
announcements for 60 days without charge. Dues to the organization begin at
$1,000 a year. Affiliate members can post jobs at a cost of $75 and others
may post at $100 for 60 days. Job listings are limited to 150 words and are
to be e-mailed to [email protected]. The web site is http://www.lta.org/.
Jobseekers may review the database at
http://www.lta.org/resources/ltjobs.htm. There are no resume postings.

E-Jobs (http://www.ejobs.org/ and see http://www.ecoemploy.com/) links to environmental opportunities in the USA and Canada. Employment includes careers such as environmental engineers, nature and wetlands scientists, GIS, technicians, chemists, earth sciences / geologists, policy and law, wildlife conservation, planning, education, wastewater treatment and operations, program and project management, natural resources, etc. Listings for government employment and nonprofit employement are available. Nonprofit jobs are listed by state or province.

Job openings that are to be posted must be related to the environment. Job announcements are to be sent to [email protected] as part of the body of an e-mail. Paid and unpaid positions are accepted. The posting must be a typical job vacancy announcement, with job description, qualifications, materials needed to apply, etc. Specific salary information is encouraged, but not required. Employers may choose to have their job postings distributed through a mailing list, in addition to (or instead of) being posted on the site. This may be particularly suited to positions that need to be filled quickly or positions that will be advertised only briefly. Employers pay an additional fee for the mailing list option, so many of the openings in the site’s Special Opportunities will not be advertised through the mailing list.

There is a range of prices for employers posting openings depending whether the employer is for-profit or not-for-profit. When submitting a job announcement, specify the number of days it is to run, typically 21-30 days.
Most grant/donor-funded non-profit organizations: US $1.30 (one dollar and thirty cents) per 1,200 words per day (contingent on timely receipt of payment). The minimum purchase is US $20.00 (twenty dollars).

In addition to placing the job announcement on the Special Opportunities Web page, the text of the announcement can be sent through the EcoEmploySM electronic mailing list, which includes over 3,800 confirmed opt-in subscribers. The additional charge for mailing list distribution is US $10 (ten dollars).

There are helpful hints scattered throughout the site for job seekers including sample resumes, links to recruiters, US Visas and warnings about job scams. There is no charge for job seekers to sort through the jobs bank which are listed by job description, states, government and so on.

The Nonprofit Career Network http://www.nonprofitcareer.com is a for-profit
web page. At the time of review of this site, September 2, 2001, the annual
fee for posting employment opportunities had been reduced to a special offer
of $495. Nevertheless, a single job position may be posted for $100 for 90
days. Employers may fax or e-mail a posting with the business address and
the cost will be invoiced. A for-profit corporation, which is looking for
someone from the nonprofit arena, may post an announcement for $125. It is
not clear from the site what length of time is purchased because at one point
it says 60 days and at another it says 90 days. There is a subscriber process
for individuals seeking employment. The cost for non-subscribers is $40 a
year to post a resume, receive automatic e-mail notice of job opportunities,
view job postings, receive notice of job fairs and other benefits.

The National Fair Housing Advocate, http://www.fairhousing.com, involves
mostly fair housing jobs that are national in scope. All jobs have to be
posted by e-mail mail on site or to: [email protected].

service. The "Thumb's" mission is to strengthen families, communities and
the nation (U.S.) by providing older and disadvantaged individuals with
opportunities to learn, work and serve others. There are service sector jobs
available at the web site, http://www.greenthumb.org/, and provides
opportunities for more than 125,000 individuals yearly in 44 states and
Puerto Rico.

NOKRI.com, http://www.nokri.com/, has listings for employers by categories
including nonprofits. Employers will find several account types. There is
a free 30-day listing to test the site. See the "Employers" section for other
options. Jobseekers may post a resume and have to complete a short
questionnaire showing interest in job functions, size of employer, preferred
location and a description of "the perfect job."

information about VISTA at http://friendsofvista.org/.
