The Nonprofit FAQ

Various nonprofit email lists, newsletters and discussion groups
Harvest Today scans news sources, websites, etc., and presents breaking news about philanthropy and nonprofits on the web and through an email distribution list. It is a service of the National Philanthropic Trust (http://www.nptrust.org).

The Nonprofit FAQ includes an extensive annotated list of online announcement and discussion services for nonprofits by Don Griesman.

On 9/11/01, Susan Tenby wrote to NPTalk (a service of OMBWatch -- see http://www.ombwatch.org/npt/nptalk) to report:

I have assembled a resource list of nonprofit technology and general
nonprofit listservs on TechSoup. There all include descriptions of the
individual lists and what they cover.

Hope that helps,

Susan

On January 25, 2000, Ryan Turner distributed to the NPTalk list (hosted by http://www.ombwatch.org) the following discussion of email discussion resources for nonprofits:

Some of us on the East Coast of the United States got a nice surprise
this morning when we woke up, namely close to a foot of snow! That
didn't stop us from attempting to put out today's edition of
NPTalk, following up on the subject of online publishing.

Last May, we published a small list of places where you could
learn about other discussion lists, as well as distribute information
about your discussion and electronic mailing lists, listservs,
e-zines, and e-newsletters, as well as list hosting services.

At the time, we were remiss in pointing out that the now
commonly-used term "listserv" refers, in fact, to the original
e-mail list hosting software (called LISTSERV) first introduced in
1986. Now, just about any electronic discussion list is called a
"listserv".

Roughly fourteen years later, the list (sorry!) of available resources
in this area has, of course, grown, so we thought it was time for an
update of what we know to be available, based on your input. We also
want to acknowledge the great heads-up on resources courtesy of
the "Poor Richard's Web Site News" listserve, (c) Copyright 1999,
by Top Floor Publishing, All Rights Reserved. [To subscribe, send
a blank e-mail message to [email protected]]
Those services cited by Poor Richard's are credited as such.

Also, for a pretty formidable set of discussion list
instruction and tips, take a look at Topica.com's "General Email
List Resources" (http://www.topica.com/resources/index.html)

To make it a little easier, we've used the following codes to
denote the services:

D = List directory, announcement or search service

H = List Hosting (usually with built-in searchable directory and archives)

S = List Software

$ = Fee involved for software or advanced features or services
