The U.S. Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) provides useful analysis of volunteering by state and major metropolitan areas using the Volunteer Supplement from the annual Current Population Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The annual national statistics can be found on the BLS website. For 2010, they are at http://www.bls.gov/news.release/volun.nr0.htm.
