Why are records in the RTF, but not in the BMF? (FAQ)

Per a conversation with Elizabeth Nelson (IRS Statistics of Income Div.):

The internet version of the BMF only includes records that have status code 00-19.

The BMF is a snapshot in a point of time and does not record if an organization was ever active, etc. The RTF posts transactions to the BMF.

While an organization files a Form 990 with the intention/belief of being an exampt organization, it may not be recognized as such by the IRS. Thus, it will not have a status code in the 00-19 range but may have been included in the RTF.
