Changes in fiscal years for 990-filers (Technical Note)

Overall, nearly 2.5% of organizations reported different start months for FY 2001 than for FY 2000 on Line A of the Form 990/990-EZ. However, for the primary two starting months, January and July, only 1.4% - 1.5% reported changes, while the percentages ranged as high as 20% (Feb.) for organizations reporting other months in FY 2000. This suggests that many organizations reported the wrong month in FY 2000 or the information was incorrectly transcribed.

Jan. is the most typical starting month with 48% of total returns, followed by July with 30% and October with 7.4%.
