"Unknown" NTEEs on the Business Master File (Technical Note)

NCCS has classified more than 2.1 million nonprofit organizations in its master list of nonprofit organizations that have been registered with the IRS since 1989. Approximately 82,000 of the organizations in its master list are listed as "unknown/unclassified" (Z99).

The level of accuracy of these codes will vary. Much more attention has been paid to larger organizations than small ones. If you are using our data for aggregate statistics, we strongly reccommend that you review the coding of the largest organizations to ensure that the codes are accurate. Authorized users may also make provisional changes to codes through our EON system. (Contact NCCS for details.)
