Operating Reserves: What are appropriate levels and what is typical in the nonprofit sector?

In late 2008, NCCS began work with the Meyer Foundation to study operating reserves among DC-area nonprofit organizations. The Nonprofit Operating Reserves Study for the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area will provide the first comprehensive assessment of the financial status of nonprofits that serve our region. The results will nable board members of nonprofits to assess the health of their organizations with solid comparative data. The findings will permit donors to understand the assets of the community in greater depth and will help them to craft grants that can lead to sustainability. This study also has the potential of being a pilot for a larger national analysis that will help nonprofits throughout the country to understand their financial status and work toward improving it.

The Nonprofit Operating Reserves Working Group has a variety of information available at http://www.nccs2.org/wiki/index.php?title=Nonprofit_Reserves_Workgroup.
