Impact of Nonprofit Organizations
The nonprofit sector is critical to the entire Southeastern North Carolina community. Nonprofits serve segments of society who fall outside the scope of the private sector and government intervention. If not for the nonprofit sector, critical services such as homeless shelters, food banks and affordable housing would go unaddressed. Nonprofits find solutions for societal problems and educate the public. That is why it is critical that nonprofits recieve proper support and resources not only to survive, but thrive in a changing environment.
The nonprofit sector has a huge impact on the economy of our state. Via the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits:
- Nonprofits provide 425,000 jobs in North Carolina - 1 out of every 9 jobs in the state.
- Nonprofits put $37 billion into the North Carolina economy each year.
- Nonprofits pay more that $15 billion in wages to North Carolinians each year.
However, nonprofits also face many challanges in achieving their missions:
- 83% of nonprofits in North Carolina saw a greater demand for their services, yet only 29% were able to meet those demands.
- A record number of people across the state are seeking assistance food banks, crisis counseling centers, and homeless shelters, yet nonprofits are struggling to meet these demands.
- In spite of the increase in demand, both charitable giving and government grants are down in the state.
In order for the nonprofit sector to continue to survive and thrive in North Carolina, organizations need access to the resources and capacity building tools that help their organizations operate. As Southeastern North Carolina continues to grow, it is critical that the areas nonprofits are equipt to serve those in need.
