Like much of the Lower and Outer Cape regions, Chatham existed primarily as a seafaring community until the late 19th century when developers saw the economic value of Chatham as a seaside resort town appealing to a wealthy clientele.
The Town of Chatham is composed of four Census-Designated Places (CDP's):Chatham (02633), North Chatham (02650), South Chatham (02659) and West Chatham (02669).
