YARMOUTH, MA


The first usage of the name "Yarmouth" occurred on January 7, 1639. Today, Yarmouth is composed of three primary villages: South Yarmouth, West Yarmouth, and Yarmouth Port. The 2010 census showed the towns population to be 23,793.Yarmouth schools, composed of two elementary schools and a middle school. The Town of Yarmouth makes up one-half of the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District and is home to this disctricts high school. 

Like much of Cape Cod, Yarmouth was inhabitied by the Wampanoag prior to European colonization. The land area now known as Yarmouth was known as Mattacheese to the native inhabitants. While Yarmouth's early economic endeavors were primarily agricultural, the areas development transitioned to tourism in the late 19th century when Yarmouth began to be developed as a summer resort.  

Yarmouth is the home of the International Fund for Animal Welfare's headquarters, and The Christmas Tree Shop, a retail chain, was estbalished at a Rt. 6A location in 1970. Yarmouth also hosts one of the Cape Cod Baseball League's competing teams, The Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.
