National Hispanic Heritage Month Events in New Mexico

Did you know that, among the 50 states, New Mexico’s population has the highest percentage of Hispanic ancestry? With such rich cultural diversity in New Mexico, it’s no wonder we take celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month seriously. This month, we enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of our heritage—and everyone is invited to join in!

When is National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrated in New Mexico? September 15 through October 15. The month begins on Sept. 15 because the date marks the anniversary of independence of five Latin American Countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this month.

Facts About New Mexico’s Hispanic Population:

  • 47% of the state’s population is Hispanic or Latino.
  • New Mexico is one of 16 states with a Hispanic population of more than half a million people.
  • About 2/3 of Albuquerque Public Schools’ student population is Hispanic.
  • Of the state’s Hispanic population, 83% were born in the U.S., while 17% were born outside the U.S.
  • More than 28% of New Mexico’s population speaks Spanish at home.

How Can YOU Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month?
