Domestic Violence Resources in New Mexico

Did you know that domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women? Every year, more than 3 million people are victims of domestic violence in the United States, most of them women and children. However, it's important to remember that domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation or income.

Thank you to the New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence for providing the following domestic violence statistics in New Mexico:

  • 1 in 3 New Mexican women will experience domestic violence at some point in their lifetime.
  • 1 in 7 New Mexican men will experience domestic violence at some point in their lifetime.
  • In 2010, New Mexico law enforcement identified 19,587 incidents of domestic violence.
  • About 63% of homeless women have been victims of intimate partner violence as adults.

The effects of domestic violence are astounding. Exposure to domestic violence as a child is linked to major diseases like cancer and stroke. Domestic violence is strongly linked to homelessness, with nearly half of U.S. cities reporting that domestic violence was the primary cause of homelessness in their municipalities.
